Trey Flip to Noseblunt Slide to 180 Out

Does it make sense? Only a person familiar with skateboarding will perfectly understand the meaning of this phrase, which is most likely to come out of the mouth of another skater. For the first time I saw these guys, pulling incredible tricks on a wooden deck with plastic wheels, I stood frozen, amazed by precise and fast movements of their feet and perfect coordination. The mystery and the incredible technique of popping a relatively heavy board in the air made me buy my own skateboard and start practicing. It was something I had to do simply because skateboarding remains the most eye-catching and thrilling street sport. But the process of gaining new skills in it cannot be compared to any other type of extreme activity.

Indeed, the challenge of learning becomes one really tough enemy for a beginner. Some of those who never tried think that they can just jump on a board, push, roll, and hop over a bench; I would love to see them trying. As for me, it took me a considerable amount of time just to learn how to control the deck under my feet. The result of this six months learning process reveals itself right now: skateboard became some sort of extention of my body. Besides that, I have spent two more months trying to reach perfection with Ollies - basic jumps over or on an obstacle. Well, after several scratches marked by scars on my knees, a twisted ankle, and hours of frustration I can proudly say that finally I am familiar with basic tricks of skateboarding. But there are years and years to be spent in skate parks, more hours to be wasted in frustration, and quite a few seconds to be blinded with sharp pain after an effective crash.

No doubt, those who defeat the fustration of the learning process might retreat in front of inevitable danger. Falling on concrete at the speed as low as five miles per hour can result in some painful scratches on knees, elbows and palms. Falling down after rolling at higher speeds will also increase the damage dramatically. I have seen kids passing out after an unsuccessful trick, when they crash; most of the skateboarding videos warn amateurs that breaking a limb or even dying is a very significant and possible threat to face. Yet, more and more guys and sometimes even girls get involved in the world of skateboarding. Most of them realize the danger but still get attracted to it. It happens because all kids and even teenagers like to play with danger; they want to be part of those who laugh when they fall, those who smile in the face of pain, get up and continue rolling. And I am proud to be one of them.

Of course, being tough is cool, but falling and smiling over and over again might seem a little dumb from the side. Every skater, including myself, does his or her best to look good, especially while doing tricks. Some people say that a skilled performance by a skater can be considered a piece of art. I cannot disagree with them. That is why tens and hundreds of bypassers gather to watch competitions among local skaters. Probably these spectators want to be as cool as competitors themselves. What is the best way to grab attention of a couple of cute girls (or maybe boys?) in the park? Simple: skate by and suddenly do something like Frontside 180 Varial Flip, land it smoothly, relax and roll away and around pretending that you've been doing this trick for years, and there is nothing easier than that.

Determination, intention to beat an unavoidable danger, to look good and to be in shape at the same time, - that is what I like about skateboarding. We the skaters know that "battle wounds" will always be part of our lifestyle, but we will gain the glory and respect of each other, significant others, friends, relatives, and hopefully someone else. Maybe in ten years my name will be in the newspapers around the globe, announcing the gold medalist of the street skateboarding competition in 2012 summer Olympic games. Who knows? But I will try!
